    The success story of the golden pair of lyricist Vairamuthu and maestro A.R. Rahman is a well known. The duo has come up with several classics and memorable songs together, but their one of the songs Vellai Pookkal, got international recognition when it was played at the funeral of Singapore’s longest serving President, S.R. Nathan.

    "While SR Nathan's demise is a source of sorrow, in this hour of grief, our only solace is that he was bid farewell with Tamil. The song has got a recognition that I did not imagine it will get while I was writing it", said Vairamuthu who referred Nathan as a friend.

    Talking more about the significance of Vellai Pookkal, the lyricist added that it was this song that led to their first meeting. He thanked the Singapore government for playing a Tamil song in front of international community.
