Ram Gopal Varma’s Savitri stirs controversy

Ram Gopal Varma, who hits headlines often for wrong reasons, is in news again. A few days back, objectionablecomments on Lord Ganesha brought film director Ram Gopal Varma in the news. And now controversy's favourite child is in the headlines for releasing provocative posters of his upcoming flick Savitri.

The posters feature an adolescent boy looking at a lady lustily. Angered by the sleazy posters, B. Padmavati, state president of All India Democratic Women’s Association says, “Two days back Ram Gopal Varma put up posters of his upcoming film Savitri on the Internet. They show a boy of around seven years staring at the navel of his teacher. What is RGV trying to prove with these vulgar posters?” She adds, “When a kid should be concentrating on studies and his career, how can he use the boy in the movie? And showing the woman in such an abusive manner puts all women in bad light, RGV also came up with an online contest asking people to share their stories if they had ever fallen for their teachers. If this continues, women teachers will lose their respect in society.”

The recently released posters have also infuriated Andhra Pradesh State Commission for Child Rights. “According to Section 292, Clause (1) and (2), children should not be exposed to vulgarity and obscenity and the punishment is five years imprisonment. It is a straight case of violation of child rights,” Achyuta Rao, president of AP State Commission of Child Rights, told media.

RGV tries to clarify the matter and explains, “The film Savitri/Sridevi is a subject matter of a teenager getting attracted to an older woman which was already dealt with in highly acclaimed films such as Malena, Cinema Paradiso, Summer Of 42, Raj kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker, Thoorpu Padamara etc which won accolades nationally and internationally.”

Lately, RGV has not been able to taste the fruit of success at the box office, but ‘negative publicity’ has always kept him in the limelight.
