During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Shakira revealed that her song Última will be the final one she writes about her ex-partner Gerard Piqué, with whom she had a relationship for 11 years until their split in 2022.

Última was the final track Shakira wrote for her upcoming album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don't Cry Anymore). The song came together when the album was nearly finished and there was no more time left in the process.

    Shakira's Emotional Creative Process

"I said, I got one more song here and it's like, it's — I gotta spit it out or I won't be able to, you know. I'll choke. I need to get this one out, she reveals. Shakira found it uncomfortable to grapple with the possibility of not being able to release the song.

She recalled how the executives at Sony responded, saying, "No, no, no, no, there's no more time. This needs to be shipped, otherwise we're not going to make it to have the vinyls ready. You can't do anything else with this album."

    Shakira's Swift Recording Session

In one afternoon, Shakira recorded and mixed the song, which was such a relief. When she shared it with Sony, she received a surprising reaction. She reflected on the power of music, noting how people can connect to the same experience or feeling, or even if they're not going through the same experience, just through empathy.

She remembers playing the song for the head of marketing at Sony. He listened, and tears began to well up in his eyes—a sight she had never witnessed before in her studio. While she had seen many women cry in her studio, she had never seen a man shed tears until that moment.
