Following the blockbuster success of 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller teased the possibility of a prequel focusing on Charlize Theron's character, Imperator Furiosa, titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Originally, Miller envisioned Theron reprising her role as a younger version of the post-apocalyptic heroine.

However, after considering the challenges of de-aging visual effects, he ultimately decided against it. Eventually, Anya Taylor-Joy was cast to portray Furiosa in the prequel. Chris Hemsworth was also confirmed as part of the cast for the movie. The first glimpse of Furiosa was unveiled in November 2023, followed by a second trailer released in March 2024.

Theron expressed her disappointment about not reprising her role in Furiosa during a 2020 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. However, in 2022, Taylor-Joy indicated that there's no animosity between the two actresses.
