    The difference between the highest and the second highest openers in 2017 has been a massive 20 crores. What this goes to show that while our ticket counters are full of opportunities to be grabbed, our films have somehow missed a trick or two this year. But that shouldn’t worry anybody since every calendar year follows the trend of picking up in its second half with a lot of lucrative release slots available.

    While we have seen a record breaking Baahubali 2 breaking every imaginable record in the books, the likes of big ticket releases like Tubelight, Rangoo, Raabta and more have put the trade in jeopardy. Anyway, all is not as bad as it looks and we are sure things are only going go uphill from here on.

    Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Hindi) - 41 Crores

    The opening of Baahubali 2 broke all records for a non-holiday opener and it was only going to be a matter of time until it started conquering the business let right and center. With over 500 crores of collection with its Hindi version itself, the film has shattered every possible myth.

    Tubelight - 21.15 Crores

    One of the saddest bit of story but even the second highest opening of the year couldn’t help Tubelight become a hit. Of course with Salman Khan, it’s virtually impossible to not have a grand opening but looking at the trends, even 21.15 crores was not enough given the standards.

    Raees - 20.42 Crores

    One of the biggest Fridays of the year happened when SRK’s Raees clashed with Hrithik’s Kaabil and despite that the former was able to post the third highest opening of the year. Had the clash not happened, the number could have been bigger.

    Jolly LLB 2 - 13.20 Crores

    Akshay continued his success streak and made his fourth consecutive 100 crore grosser with Jolly LLB 2. The film that released in February registered a good opening of 13.20 crores and ended up being a hit.

    Badrinath Ki Dulhania - 12.25 Crores

    While the film took advantage of its positive word of mouth, Badrinath Ki Dulhania still did not fail to open big. With an opening of 12.25 crores, the film made sure it was going to put up a healthy opening weekend number.

    While it clashed with SRK’s Raees, the Sanjay Gupta directorial still managed to earn well at the box office cashing in on the word of mouth. The film was able to earn big and despite competition and ended up being a big hit.

    Half Girlfriend - 10.27 Crores

    While it couldn’t really become a box office hit despite the kind of opening it got, Half Girlfriend banked mostly on its music and youth appeal. However, this kind of opening should have translated into something better.

    Sachin: A Billion Dreams - 8.40 Crores

    One of the rare movies that became a box office success despite being a docu-feature is this movie based on the life of Sachin Tendulkar. With this opening, the film went onto to earn more than 50 crores at the box office.

    Rangoon - 6.07

    The colossal flop that went down as one of the biggest disasters of Vishal Bhardwaj’s career, Rangoon did manage to put a moderate opening at the box office.

    Raabta - 5.61

    Such has been the behavior of 2017 that even the film that failed miserably at the box office managed to enter top 10 openings of the year.
