Certification Board must not act like a censor board, says Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan is the new entrant to join the bandwagon of members supporting certification and not censorship. After Aamir Khan and many others stated that CBFC should only be made to certify content and not censor it, veteran and elite industry name Kamal Haasan has joined him. Kamal is in news these days as his film ‘Uttama Villain’ nears the release date.

Talking to Bollywood Hungama, Kamal also expressed a laughable surprise at groups protesting against film’s content. To the groups that believe a song in his upcoming film may hurt some religious sentiments, the actor and director only calls it ‘lack of knowledge.’ "As an ex- Vaishnavite and an ex-Shaivite, I can only feel concern for my detractors lack of knowledge on their own mythology. These are small groups who claim to represent the quite majority who know better," he said. "The certification board also had responsible people some I sure would like to identify themselves as such. They enjoyed the film and found no reason to take umbrage. My film has been certified U, which means it is suited to audiences of all ages," he added stressing the certification grade by the board.

Talking about the recent censorship events and controversy, Kamal termed it all as a childish act. "Censorship is a clear sign of someone not wanting you to speak your mind even if thoughts are just and normal. Even children try to stop their friends from revealing something which they think might be embarrassing to them. It is a childish trait in a grownup society. Governments which are still not open to democracy, do such things. We are not under such a government," he added.

Supporting the call earlier made by some actors including Aamir Khan, Kamal stated that a board should only be made for certification and nothing else. "Why should a certification board appointed by a government which in turn is appointed by us, behave like a censor board? Morals change every fifty years drastically. So policing it according to scriptures thousands of years old is futile. Not all that is old is gold. Some are just fossils of what they used to be," Kamal quoted.
