Delhi High Court seeks response from PK makers on plagiarism issue

After a Hindi novelist filed a case against the makers of Aamir Khan starrer PK accusing them of stealing ideas from his book ‘Farishta’, the Delhi High Court on Thursday sought a response from the makers on the issue. According to reports, Kapil Isapuri, a Hindi novelist approached the court seeking a compensation of Rs. 1 crore against makers of the film, that recently went on to break all box office records.

The makers Raju Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, will now have to submit their explanation by September 4. Kapil, the petitioner was quoted as saying that team PK had “stolen the characters, expression of ideas and scenes from the novel”. This will now go into investigation if the charges pressed by him hold any substance. Lawyers from the side of the makers have told that the first draft of the script was already registered with the writers association in July 2010 under the title Ghan Jaana Hai. The lawyers added that from there on, as many as five progressive versions of the script were submitted with title PK coming in by 2012.

To give a fighting response to the dates theory, the petitioner has claimed that his script of the novel was already submitted in 2009 and the novel was published in 2013. PK on the other hand had released in December 2014. While the court didn’t find a very reasonable theory of statements from either of the sides, Justice Najmi Waziri also explored the possibility of two similar ideas originating through two different minds. While the process continues, let’s keep a track on proceedings.
