In a Bollywood career spanning five years, Rajkumar Rao has garnered rave reviews for his roles in several films. In fact, he was honoured with a National Film Award for his role in Shahid (2013). The actor, who is currently part of several B-Town ventures, believes that he learns something new with every project. “You grow with every film. I have matured as an actor. Learning is a never-ending process, because as an artiste, there’s always scope for improvement,” he says.

While the 31-year-old is known for taking up films with intense subjects and sensitive storylines, he is not worried about being typecast. “As an actor, I just see the story and what my character demands. It’s not a conscious decision to choose a sensitive subject or a serious film. I just do movies that touch my heart,” he says, adding that the kinds of films that are made today are diverse. “Things are changing. People are writing different stories, and it’s an exciting time for actors to experiment with different genres,” he says.

Unlike his contemporaries, Rajkumar likes to take things slow, and doesn’t consider anyone his competition. “I don’t believe in competition. I only compete with myself. I feel you cannot compete in acting, because as an actor, you deal with emotions, and you cannot compete with emotions. It can’t be that I cry better than he does, right?” says Rajkumar, who is currently working on films by Vikramaditya Motwane, Ramesh Sippy and Hansal Mehta.
