Even though the promotions for her new film are on in full swing, Kareena Kapoor Khan hasn’t stepped out of home for over a week because she has been down with high fever. “I’ve had a terrible viral fever. In fact, I was running a temperature of 102. I just came back from London (UK). I think it got worse [after coming back to India],” she says.

Despite that, However, she sounds cheerful and excited, as she talks about the raging censorship issue in the country, working with Shahid Kapoor, and more.

What is your take on the censorship issue, especially since your film was dragged into it?

It is a film at the end of the day. Honestly, there has to be some sort of middle path that we have to come out with, because this kind of war (between the makers and the Central Board of Film Certification) can’t keep going on. So, I think the censorship laws definitely need to be re-assessed. As for my film, I think it (the high court’s decision to release it with one cut) is a triumph for Abhishek (Chaubey; director). It is his vision and it is a brave film that he has made.

Of late, you seem to be taking work a bit slow…

It took me three-four months to say yes to a new film (co-starring Sonam Kapoor) because I want to work at my own pace and in the films I believe in. I’m not interested in doing five films a year. That is not how I work. I don’t think any actor wants to work in five films a year. It should be about doing one or two good movies that you believe in.

But you’ve always maintained that you love your work...

Yes, I will always be working (smiles). Some people even said that I won’t work after I get married, but I think I have worked more after my marriage than before.

It was reported that you are in the family way.

I think people have always been speculating [about various things]. But whenever the time is right, and whenever it (the pregnancy) happens, Saif (Ali Khan; husband) and I will be the first ones to talk about it [publically]. We don’t look at it as an invasion of our privacy because people are going to talk anyway. So, Saif and I will tell the media and our fans whenever there is such a thing. People should just wait for us to talk to the press.

At this stage of your career, do you worry about competition?

I don’t think it should bother me after 70 films and nearly 16 years [in Bollywood]. If it [still] bothers me, then I don’t think I have a life (laughs). I am beyond all of that now. I think people should also understand that it (such things) makes me feel small.

There have been rumours that you are not going all out to promote your upcoming film, as you are not happy with the length of your role.

These are just rumours. The real reason is that I don’t like promotions. I just promoted Ki & Ka, and I have nothing new to talk about. That’s the reason I am not even on social media. I like it that way. I think people should respect it, as every actor’s modus operandi is very different.

So, you have no issue with your role?

I was present for the trailer launch of the film, and I have done this movie knowing what my part is. I have not gone blindly into it. I wanted to attend the press conference on Tuesday (June 14). But I was really ill. Honestly, people who know me are aware that I don’t like promotions. But I like to talk to mediapersons I know, and send messages to my fans. I’d like to leave it at that.

Also, Shahid has been bombarded with questions about you two sharing screen space in the future. Will you two be comfortable doing that?

Of course, we will be comfortable. I don’t know why people are assuming that we would feel awkward. When I had said yes to this film, I didn’t even know that Shahid was in this movie. I just read the script and agreed to do it. I will continue to do that irrespective of other reasons. If there is a great script, maybe we will work together in the future too. I have worked with possibly every actor in the industry. So, I want to maintain that stand.

Shahid also maintains the same stance…

He is working with Saif in his next film, and they are cool. So, I don’t understand the fuss. They are not 12 years old, and I am sure they are mature men who know exactly how to behave. I think it’s silly to even answer these questions, because it just makes everybody small. I don’t want to put anybody down because it doesn’t make sense.

There have been talks that you might become a judge on a reality dance TV show?

I am not doing television right now. Not for a while, as I am not ready for it. It requires too much commitment.

Sara – the new actor in B-Town?

I am delighted because I think Sara (Ali Khan; Saif’s daughter) is gorgeous. She is a deadly combination of beauty and brains (smiles). We (Saif and I) are excited about her; she is such a brave girl. I am confident that she is going to make a wonderful actor.
