Ram Madhvani’s directorial debut, ‘Neerja’, won the National Award at the 64th National Film Awards. The movie was a biopic on Neerja Bhanot, a 22-year-old air-hostess, who sacrificed her life to save the passengers on a flight which was hijacked by terrorists. In respect of her family, Madhvani dedicated his National Award to them.

Talking to PTI, the director shared, “I did not anticipate the National Award for 'Neerja'. I was happily surprised. I am thankful to the Bhanot family. This award goes to them, they deserve it”. He also shared that Neerja’s brothers Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot are very happy with the recognition. Madhvani also spoke to Sonam about the award and was glad to find out that she is currently shooting in Maheshwar, which is where they shot the climax of ‘Neerja’.

When the director found out that his film won the National Award, he was at an Ayurvedic retreat center with his son. After seeing 89 missed calls and hundreds of messages, he freaked out a little but then his son told him that his movie had won. “We had herbal tea that's how we celebrated the good news”, Madhvani added.
