Vidya Balan unhappy about women’s portrayal in films

One of the most talented actresses in our Hindi film industry, Vidya Balan, is known for her challenging roles in women-centric films like Dirty Picture and Kahaani. But the actress is not at peace with the standard of women’s portrayal in films which she finds to be highly stereotypical.

The actress expressed her views, "I think it (portrayal of actresses) is changing and it will keep changing for a while. Change is never absolute but we have definitely taken a few baby steps towards the change (in portrayal of actresses in films).” "I think 95 per cent of the portrayal is still very stereotypical and only five per cent portrayals are attempting something different, more realistic like `Bobby` (her film `Bobby Jassos`)," she added further. She passed her comments about her recently played character, Bobby, which is more practical than predictable.

So how is the character of Bobby? As per Vidya, "It is not like that I have to be serious, sharp and stylish for being a detective. I am a real girl and untrained, I am not like Sherlock Holmes and any of his ilk.” To add more, "In Bobby`s case there is certain simplicity and innocence which I am learning along the way and is very real. So I think the portrayals are getting more interesting because they are getting realistic but they are just five per cent of the kind of films that are getting made.” Vidya always checks if the role, which she would play, has something unusual to offer or not. She finds her contemporary, Kangana Ranaut, as an impressive actress on the board who always tries to act in some out-of-the-box roles. She praised the Queen actress saying, "I always had liking for Kangana. I remember watching `Fashion` and I think she was incredible in the film. I think she is extremely bold and brave person and that is why she is like that in her films too. It is interesting to see the kind of work she is doing.” Vidya also suggests that remuneration for female actors should be hiked, in case of commercial films at least, as they have equal importance in ensuring success for the films. Vidya’s Bobby Jasoos, also starring Ali Fazal, will bow in two weeks, July 4.
