He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor this year, but American actor JK Simmons (left), who won the prestigious award for playing a music instructor in the film, Whiplash, doesn’t relate himself to the character Fletcher at all. The 60-year-old actor, who has previously worked in blockbuster hits including the Spider-Man franchise (2002 to 2007) and Juno (2009), doesn’t think he is a perfectionist.

“I don’t think I am a perfectionist. But in my work, I do try to get things right. If there are specific skills involved — like in Whiplash, where I essay a German man and play the piano — I’m very meticulous about learning accents aand those kinds of things. That’s probably the closest I come to being a perfectionist,” he said in a recent interview.

Simmons, who learnt music in college, and then later shifted to acting, also believes that the character he played in Whiplash cannot exist in real life.

“I certainly knew some guys who studied under some brilliant musicians who were perfectionists. But I never heard of anybody who was as borderline psychopathic and abusive as Fletcher,” he said.
