The 29-year-old plays the role of Turing’s fiancée, Joan Clarke, who closely worked with Turing as a code-breaker during the World War II. Knightley says that she believed that the role wasn’t going to be accurate, despite her efforts, because the film was not about Clarke.

“I think there are always questions of morality when you make a drama out of something. It’s never going to be completely accurate, but it is always something that you go, ‘Can we make it as close as possible’... You do always try. I think you could get a lot closer if this were the Joan Clarke Story,” she says.

Further, she says that the secrecy around Clarke’s identity till the 90s was why she approached the role differently. “The secrecy around the work that they did during the War was incredible, and none of them spoke about it. It was classified until the 90s,” she says. Knightley, who is also nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Supporting Actress category for the film, says she said yes to the role because of the script. “When I first got the script, I loved it, but actually the role of Joan was a lot smaller in the initial script. I said ‘yes’ to that too, I think for the reason that it was a strong film,” she says.
