    Meryl Streep to be honoured with Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Monte Cristo Award

    It is a delight for Meryl Streep’s fans as the acclaimed Hollywood actress has been named as the next winner of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s annual Monte Cristo Award. This award is given every year for acknowledged contributions to the world of theatre.

    Before starting the film career, Streep was connected to the theatre industry and stayed attached to the same over the years. She appeared in The Seagull in 2001 and Mother and Courage and her Children in 2006. She also signed up asapresenting producer for the Broadway show of Bridge and Tunnel in 2006. In 2012 she enacted Juliet opposite Romeo (Kevin Kline) in the Public Theater’s Romeo and Juliet.

    She will be seen next in the film adaptation of Pulitzer-winning play August: Osage County which is scheduled to release this Christmas by the Weinstein Co. Presently she is working on Rob Marshall’s screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. Earlier the prestigious Monte Cristo Award was given to the likes of Michael Douglas, Christopher Plummer, Kevin Spacey and Brian Dennehy among many others. The award will be presented to Streep by actor Joe Grifasi, alumni at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and also Streep’s classmate at the Yale School of Drama. The award ceremony will take place on April 21 in Gotham.
