Debutant filmmaker Manikandan’s upcoming Tamil flick Kaaka Muttai is heading for a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Set in the slums of India and co-produced by Dhanush and Vetrimaaran, the Kollywood drama reflects a tale of two happy-go-lucky slum boys craving for pizza.

The film is all set to be premiered on September 5, under the Discovery category, which screens films from across the globe. Apparently, the movie will also be screened on September 6 and September 13 at the festival.

Confirming the news, director M Manikandan says, "Even when I first narrated the story to my producers Vetri Maaran and Dhanush, they said that the film should get worldwide recognition. That's why, even though we had completed the film five months ago, we patiently waited for it to have a world premiere at an international film festival. We sent the film to the festival two months ago and I'm happy that it got selected on the basis of its merit."

The official website of TIFF compares the film to Danny Boyle's Oscar-winningfilmSlumdog Millionaire and adds, "The Crow's Egg (Kaaka Muttai's English title) is a breath of fresh air, not because it mimics Danny Boyle — it doesn't — but because this family film at last finds a way to shift the lens to an exuberantly Indian perspective. In his feature debut, M Manikandan uses this simple tale to paint a vivid portrait of urban child poverty in south India. But it is one of hope and initiative rather than despair."
