Moana 2: Cast, release date, and everything else to know about the sequel

Get ready to set sail once again because a sequel to Moana is in development. Disney CEO Bob Iger officially announced the upcoming film in February, along with sharing thrilling new insights into what awaits in this next adventure.

As reported by Variety, an extension of Moana was initially conceived as a television series but evolved into a feature-length film after Bob Iger was impressed by the early footage. However, this isn't the only Moana project Disney has in progress; they've also revealed intentions for a live-action adaptation of the original.

Moana Sequel Brings Back Original Cast

According to a press release from Disney, the upcoming film will bring back beloved characters like Moana and Maui. Auli'i Cravalho has confirmed she will be returning to voice Moana in the sequel. Additionally, it's highly probable that Dwayne Johnson, who portrays Maui in the live-action adaptation, will also reprise his role for the sequel.

In the sequel, Moana receives an unexpected summons from her wayfinding ancestors, prompting her to embark on a voyage to the distant seas of Oceania and explore perilous, forgotten waters. This adventure presents challenges unlike any she has encountered before.

Behind the Scenes

The upcoming film will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr., a seasoned Disney veteran with extensive experience as a storyboard artist on projects like the live-action Lion King, Encanto, and Raya and the Last Dragon. While Lin-Manuel Miranda, who composed songs like “How Far I’ll Go” for the original film, is not anticipated to contribute new songs to the sequel.

On February 7, 2024, Disney unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new movie, showcasing Moana's return to the sea. The highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2, is set to hit theaters sooner than expected, with a release date of November 27, 2024.
