It came as a major shock to netizens when Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan announced his separation from his filmmaker wife Kiran Rao. The two had been madly in love and together for over a decade. But even though they parted ways in 2021, Aamir and Kiran continued to be best friends. This was evident at Aamir’s daughter Ira Khan’s wedding, where the ‘modern’ family set goals for many. They are now co-parenting their 12 year old son Azad Rao Khan and even collaborated for Kiran’s second directorial Laapataa Ladies, which was backed by Aamir’s production house.

As most of us know, Aamir and Kiran met for the first time on the sets of his 2001 film Lagaan. He was married to Reena Dutta at the time but it was speculated that the actor was involved with Kiran, who was an assistant director on the film. However, Kiran has now clarified that they began dating much later in 2004 and she was actually with someone else during the shoot of Lagaan. In an interview with Zoom, Kiran revealed that she and Aamir got together two years after his divorce when he was shooting for Mangal Pandey: The Rising. She was busy assisting Ashutosh Gowariker on Swades at the time.

Kiran shared that she and Aamir were not in touch after Lagaan and reconnected during commercial shoots much later. They eventually fell in love and began dating. The two even went for couple’s counselling at one point in their relationship. Kiran shared, “Aamir and I did couple’s counselling. It becomes a neutral ground where you talk about your needs, how you see the other person and that was very beneficial to me. It helped that Aamir and I agreed that we both have to be honest with each other, whatever be the case.”

Currently Aamir and Kiran are busy soaring high on the success of their film Laapataa Ladies, which received lots of love from the audience.
