Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar's upcoming movie Good Bad Ugly has captured the imagination of movie buffs with its first-look posters. The producers recently unveiled Ajith's character look from the movie, generating quite a buzz among fans.
According to some industry sources, Netflix has bought the streaming rights to Good Bad Ugly at a record price. Some claim that the producers will receive about Rs 95 crore from the streaming giant. If true, this would make it one of the top three digital sales in the history of Tamil cinema's streaming deals. Ajith's contemporary, Suriya, saw his fantasy drama fetch about Rs 80 crore from the sale of its streaming rights to Amazon Prime Video. However, producer KE Gnanavel Raja claimed that this sale only encapsulates the South Indian version and that they have not yet finalized the streaming deals for the film's other versions, which means the combined sum of all the versions could be much higher for Kanguva.
At the moment, Thalapathy Vijay's Leo holds the top place with a revenue of more than Rs 100 crore from its streaming rights. According to reports, Netflix acquired the 2023 blockbuster for a whopping Rs 125 crore.
Streaming giants, while willing to pay high prices for star-driven films, have become more selective with content-driven, medium, and low-budget movies. Industry insiders suggest OTT platforms are no longer interested in buying new movies for direct premiere. According to the latest trends, films first need to prove their merits at the box office, and based on their performance, the streaming platforms make their offers. Additionally, streaming platforms seem to save on promotional efforts when they acquire movies that have had a theatrical run for a few weeks.
