After the trailer of Manoj Bajpayee starrer Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai was unveiled, the team of Asaram Bapu served the legal notice to the filmmakers. The film’s promotion and release have been asked to restrict asserting that the movie is offensive and damages Asaram’s reputation. It is also claimed that the film hurts the sentiments of his followers and believers.

Led by Manoj, the upcoming film is a courtroom drama based on a true story. It follows the five-year-long fight in the court to bring justice to a girl who was sexually assaulted by a godman. Reacting to the polarised view on the trailer, Manoj told India Today, “The thing is there has been a court verdict on this case. There has been a judgement and punishment which was decided by the High Court. There is nothing above the law and the court. So, once that is proved in the court of law, how can we be responsible for telling the story? We have only filmed it. We only made a film on it. There is no change from our side.”

For the unversed, producer Asif Shaikh received a legal notice from Sant Shri Asharamji Charitable Trust. He said that they had bought the rights to make a biopic on PC Solanki, the lawyer who fought against Asaram in the case. Talking about the alterations made to the film, Manoj added, “There are a few incidents that we have taken from outside as well, for examples, names have been altered, except for PC Solanki’s name which is retained in the film because he agreed to it. But rest is fictional. All the names other than that are fictional as we refrained from using original names.”

Directed by Apoorva Singh Karki, the Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai brings back the team of Manoj and Suparn Verma, who earlier collaborated for The Family Man. It is scheduled to stream on ZEE5 on May 23, 2023.
