Music maestro Ilaiyaraaja has surprised everyone by accusing the makers of Malayalam cinema's biggest blockbuster Manjummel Boys of copyright violations. He recently sent a legal notice to the producers, alleging the unauthorized use of his iconic song "Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan" from the cult classic Gunaa.

It wouldn't be wrong to say that "Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan" was the beating heart of this survival drama that revolves around a close-knit group of friends. Director Chidambaram, recently appearing on the podcast Filmi Fiesta , confirmed that he had secured the required permissions through proper channels for using the original version of the song "Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan" in Manjummel Boys.

"Fortunately, I expected it (securing permission) to be a complicated process. But, it was easy," Chidambaram said on Filmi Fiesta. He made this statement weeks before Ilaiyaraaja sent him a legal notice.

Chidambaram further claimed in the same interview that he would not have made Manjummel Boys if the producers had failed to get permission to use the iconic Tamil song in the movie. "I decided to open the movie with 'Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan' and close it with that song. I asked the production team to get the rights to the song. I told them, if you don't secure the rights, there was no movie," revealed Chidambaram.

Chidambaram even thanked Ilaiyaraaja and Kamal Haasan for creating this song about 33 years ago, allowing him to make Manjummel Boys.

One cannot exaggerate the instrumental role of the song "Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan" in the historic performance of Manjummel Boys at the box office. The strategic use of the song towards the end of the movie elevated the narration and experience of the audience to a whole new level, making it the biggest hit in the history of Malayalam cinema.

Manjummel Boys went on to earn more than Rs 240 crore from its worldwide ticket sales, and it earned more than Rs 63 crore in Tamil Nadu alone.
