Coolie: Lokesh Kanagaraj promises to make these changes in the Rajinikanth-starrer!

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj recently opened up about his next ambitious project Coolie which has superstar Rajinikanth in the lead. At a recent event, the LCU director revealed that his upcoming film with Rajinikanth will have a 'good scope and greater importance for female characters'.  

Coolie to have great female roles

The director emphasised that Coolie will have memorable female roles, unlike his other films. Looks like the director has taken the feedback from critics of his previous work very seriously and is all set to write worthy female characters for his next anticipated action flick.  

He also added that the shooting of the film will commence in the first week of June 2024.

Absence of strong female protagonists in Lokesh Kanagaraj films

For the unversed, when LCU-based films such as Vikram, Kaithi and Leo were released, many criticised the director for failing the Bechdel test. In the violent testosterone-driven world of Lokesh’s films, female characters are left in the shadows. Viewers noted that there were hardly any female characters in the director’s previous films, that are worth remembering like its male protagonists and antagonists. And now that the director has confirmed that he will be making the changes, it's going to be exciting to watch what the director has in store for us!

Rumoured female stars in Coolie

Earlier, it was revealed that Malayalam actress Shobana will be sharing screen space with the superstar; the duo was famously paired in Mani Ratnam’s 1991 iconic film Thalapathi. Shruti Haasan is also rumoured to be playing a pivotal role in the film. However, an official announcement on the cast and crew is yet to be revealed.

Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie (Thalaivar 171)

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the action flick’s explosive title teaser featured Thalaivar Rajinikanth fighting goons at a factory-like place. The short glimpse was shot in a monochromatic theme with just the gold colour highlighted. The teaser received a massive reception from viewers, who are waiting for more updates from the director. Actors such as Nagarjuna Akkineni, Ranveer Singh and Mic Mohan are also reportedly part of the project. Anirudh Ravichander is scoring the music for the film.
