Dhoom director Sanjay Gadhvi dies at 56; Sanjay Gupta, Kunal Kohli and others mourn his sudden demise

    Dhoom fame director Sanjay Gadhvi passed away at his Mumbai home on Sunday. The filmmaker’s daughter Sanjina Gadhvi shared the news that he most likely due to heart attack. The shocking news came three days prior to his 57th birthday. The director’s demise came as a shock to his contemporaries Kunal Kohli and Sanjay Gupta, who mourned his loss. 

    Sanjay’s daughter said, “He passed away at 9.30 am this morning at his residence. We are not sure what it is, but it is most likely a heart attack. He wasn't unwell, he was perfectly healthy,” she told news agency PTI. The late director is survived by his wife Gina and two daughters, with Sanjina being the elder one.

    Director Sanjay Gupta took to Twitter to express grief. He wrote, “Gone too soon buddy. Will miss your always happy energy. Rest In Peace my friend.” On the other hand, Kunal Kohli tweeted, “This is beyond shocking. #SanjayGadhvi RIP never thought I’d have to write your obituary. Shared an office for many years at YRF, lunch dubbas, discussions. Will miss you my friend. This is too hard to accept.” Trade analyst Taran Adarsh also mourned his demise, saying, “This is heartbreaking... Shocked, disturbed and saddened to hear of #Dhoom and #Dhoom2 director #SanjayGadhvi’s demise... Condolences to the family... Om Shanti.”

    Meanwhile, Sanjay had made his directorial debut with 2000 film Tere Liye, which went unnoticed. He then directed Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai in 2002 for Yash Raj Films. The film starred Jimmy Shergill, Uday Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Tulip Joshi. The film was a moderate success. It was his Dhoom series that gained attention. He directed 2004 Dhoom and Dhoom 2 in 2006. Among other films, he directed Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan and Minissha Lamba-starrer Kidnap in 2008, Arjun Rampal-starrer Ajab Gazabb Love in 2012 and Amit Sadh and Rahul Dev-starrer Operation Parindey in 2020.
