Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran's latest comedy movie "Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil" is off to a promising start at the box office. The film has achieved the third-highest opening at the Kerala box office this year, following Mohanlal's "Malaikottai Vaaliban" and Prithviraj's "Aadujeevitham."

According to reports, "Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil" collected about Rs 3.8 crore in Kerala alone. The trade expects the film's ticket sales to soar on account of positive reviews from critics.

The Malayalam film industry has experienced a great run at the box office since the start of this year. While theatres in neighbouring states are running empty and many are even closed due to a lack of fresh content, the Malayalam film industry has surprised everyone by delivering back-to-back blockbusters.

Mohanlal's "Malaikottai Vaaliban" was expected to take the box office by storm. However, poor reviews and unfavourable word of mouth hurt the film's performance. But movies that were released without much fanfare went on to achieve great commercial success.

"Premalu" became the first big hit of Malayalam cinema this year. Made on a budget of less than Rs 5 crore, the film ended up earning more than Rs 130 crore in ticket sales. "Manjummel Boys" took a very moderate opening in cinemas but ended up dominating theatres, not just in Kerala, but in Tamil Nadu too. The film became the biggest-ever hit in the history of Malayalam cinema by raking in more than Rs 240 crore. "Aadujeevitham" and "Aavesham" also continued the industry's winning streak by breaching the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the global box office.

Going by early trends, "Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil" is also well poised to make a significant impact at the box office. Directed by Vipin Das, the film also stars Basil Joseph, Nikhila Vimal, Anaswara Rajan, and Yogi Babu.
