Shamshera director Karan on how different Ranbir is from Rishi Kapoor; remembers fighting with latter during Agneepath

10 years ago, back in 2012, filmmaker Karan Malhotra made his directorial debut with the very successful Agneepath . He got the chance to work with late superstar Rishi Kapoor who won several praises for his portrayal of villain Rauf Lala. A decade later, Malhotra is all set to bring back Rishi’s son Ranbir Kapoor to the silver screen with his next film Shamshera . It marks Ranbir’s return to films 4 years after his last release Sanju. Well, working with the father as well as the son helped Karan decode how different they are from one another.

In a recent chat with ETimes, the filmmaker revealed that Ranbir and Rishi’s culture of acting is very similar. However, their personalities on set are as different as North and South Poles. Karan explained, “Chintu uncle was a very flamboyant, loud, out-there and confrontational person. Ranbir is the complete opposite of that. Ranbir is happy-go-lucky. He does his masti quietly. He’s happy with himself as well as indifferent.”

Remembering his experience of working with Rishi in Agneepath, the director revealed that they had a lot of fights and arguments but he cherishes those moments. Karan shared, “He would always challenge me and make my conviction stronger. With him, it was like arguing and fighting with your parents. Woh gaali bhi dete the, dhakka bhi maarte the (He'd swear and even push me) and would say pagal ho gaya hai tu (you've gone mad). We used to be at loggerheads often.”

He further revealed that while their personalities are different, Rishi and Ranbir have one major similarity-- they surrender to the vision of the film and the filmmaker. Well, this aspect reassures us that Shamshera could be as big a hit as Agneepath with yet another feather to the filmmaker’s cap. We can’t wait to watch the period action film when it arrives in theatres on 22nd July.
