Malayalam superstar Mammootty's upcoming movie Turbo is likely to add momentum to the ongoing terrific performance of Malayalam movies at the box office. The film, in particular, is expected to perform exceedingly well in Kerala.

According to prerelease tracking estimates and advance ticket sales, Turbo has already sold Rs 3 crore worth of tickets in Kerala alone. Not just in Kerala, the film is also receiving a huge theatrical launch in other parts of the country. The film will hit more than 350 screens outside Kerala, while it has secured about 700 screens in overseas markets. This is one of the biggest releases in Mammootty's career.

Judging from the trends, Turbo will seemingly continue the winning streak of the Malayalam film industry. A few months ago, many expressed displeasure and speculated about the potential of Malayalam movies to appeal to the sensibilities of mass audiences. However, the year 2024 has been a terrific year for the industry.

Besides garnering critical acclaim, most of the Malayalam movies released so far have also exceeded expectations in terms of ticket sales. The Malayalam film industry has been pushing the limits of its box office potential and widening its audience base across the country.

According to reports, in the last five months, the Malayalam film industry has generated about Rs 1000 crore just from theatrical collections. Films such as Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, Aavesham, and Premalu also clicked with non-Malayali audiences, allowing these films to set new box office benchmarks. Recently, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil, a comedy-drama starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, grossed Rs 50 crore within a week of its release.

Earlier this year, Mammootty also scored a huge hit with his period psychological thriller Bramayugam. If Turbo clicks with the critics, it might also breach the Rs 100 crore mark.

Turbo is due in cinemas on May 23.
