When Abhishek Bachchan proposed to Aishwarya Rai using a prop ring from Guru sets instead of a solitaire

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai starrer Guru is special film in this reel to real life couple’s filmography. The Mani Ratnam directorial released 15 years ago on 12 January 2007 and Aishwarya and Abhishek who were dating at the time announced their engagement only two days later.

While it is a well known fact that Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya on a hotel room balcony in New York after Guru’s premiere in the Big Apple, did you know that the ring he used ask the actress to marry him was a fake?

Abhishek had once revealed in an interview how he ended up proposing to his now wife on a hotel balcony and had shared, “I was filming in New York for a movie. And, I used to stand on the balcony of my hotel room and wish that, ‘One day, wouldn’t it be nice if I was together with her, married. Years later, we were there for the premiere of Guru. After the premiere, we were back in the hotel. So, I took her to the very same balcony, and I asked her to marry me.”

Abhishek and Aishwarya played a couple in Guru and the ring that the actor slipped onto her finger in the film was actually the one he used when he proposed, the actress had once revealed in an interview with a magazine. The ring was no solitaire but a studio prop which the actor took permission from the makers to keep for sentimental reasons after the proposal and Aishwarya saying yes.

The actress had further spoken of her relationship with Abhishek and his proposal using the studio prop saying, “He is original and real, like our relationship. There is nothing predictable or boring about our life. We nurture each other. The gesture was spontaneous and meaningful. God has been kind to us. We can certainly afford those standard rocks. But do we need them?"

Abhishek was hailed for his performance in Guru which emerged a huge success while the actor later tied the knot with Aishwarya in April the same year.
