Gadar 2: Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel's romantic scene shot in Gurudwara sparks controversy, SGPC demands action

The makers of Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel starrer Gadar 2 have got themselves into trouble. The Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) objected to the shooting of a romantic scene inside Gurudwara. The development comes amid the outrage over Adirpurush director Om Raut’s goodbye kiss to actress Kriti Sanon inside Tirupati premises.

"We strongly objected to the shooting of objectionable scenes of 'Gadar 2' within the limits of Gurudwara Sahib," the SGPC said in a statement. The committee also demanded an inquiry against the Gadar director Anil Sharma and actors Sunny and Ameesha. In the purportedly romantic leaked scene, Sunny and Ameesha could be seen standing arm in arm as they gaze at each other. SGPC secretary expressed displeasure and said that Gurudwara is a place of worship and such scenes should not be shot there. However, the makers of the film are yet to issue a statement on the controversy.

Earlier in the day, a viral video of Om Raut and Kriti Sanon drew ire from Ramesh Naidu Nagothu, the BJP State Secretary in Andhra Pradesh. “Is it really necessary to bring your antics to a sacred place? Engage in public displays of affection, like kissing and hugging in front of the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala is deemed disrespectful and unacceptable,” he tweeted. The head priest at Telangana's Chilkur Balaji Temple also criticised the act.

Gadar 2 is an upcoming sequel to the 2001 film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, in which Sunny and Ameesha will be reprising their roles of Tara Singh and Sakeena respectively. The 2001 film revolved around the story of a truck driver and his fight to get back his wife back to India. The upcoming sequel will take the story forward from where it ended. While the first film traced the story from the time of 1947 to 1954, the upcoming film will follow the timeline between 1954 to 1971.

Meanwhile, the makers are currently set to re-release Gadar: Ek Prem Katha in theatres in 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos audio format. The upcoming second instalment of the film is slated to hit theatres on August 11, 2023.
