'They award excellence in cinema, not on box office': Twitterati stand divided with Oscar's official entry of Chhello Show over RRR

    Talking about Chhello Show, Pan Nalin’s directorial Gujarati film is a coming-of-age drama about a young boy's love affair with cinema in a village in Saurashtra. The film stars Bhavin Rabari, Vikas Bata, Richa Meena, Bhavesh Shrimali, Dipen Raval, and Rahul Koli.

    Although India’s 2023 Oscar entry Chhello Show (Last Film Show) was the unanimous choice made by the Film Federation of India, it has hurt SS Rajamouli’s RRR team and fans. But there are still chances of the movie as the US distributor, Variance Films, has requested the Academy to consider the film 'in all categories'. However, the decision has led to a debate on Twitter with some in favor of the Gujarati film, and others rooting for Ram Charan and Jr NTR starrer blockbuster film.

    While one of the Twitterati wrote, “People really thought that #RRR will be India's official entry to #Oscars because of this cartoon scene in the film. Only kids can like this stupid non-sense kind of action. Another defended, “Literally every western critic who had some influence in Oscars had praised #RRR. So, common sense dictates that it should have been the official entry to Oscars. Alas!”  

    “#RRR doesn’t need to compete in reservation categoryIt will win in general category as it is the best movie of the year. If Naatu Naatu doesn’t win music Oscar then what else can ?, ”commented one of them, while another defied saying, “Oscars never award (with few exceptions) movies based on Box office, they award excellence in cinema, not on box office, and this movie #ChelloShow is outstanding, #RRR has flaws it's just that it was discovered by the US and getting praise, doesn't make it outstanding excellence.” Check out the reactions here:

On the other hand, RRR is a fictional tale about two warriors, Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komaram Bheem, who decide to join forces and chart an inspirational path of freedom against British rulers. Besides Ram and Jr NTR, the film also stars Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in supporting roles.

    According to a new report by Variety, RRR will be submitted at the Oscars in the category of best picture, director, original screenplay, lead actor supporting actor (Ajay Devgn), supporting actress (Alia Bhatt), and sound and visual effects among others. Meanwhile, the Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 12, 2023, in Los Angeles.
