Nepotism debate: Onir says his experience with Karan Johar has been different

The whole Karan Johar- Kangana Ranaut nepotism episode saw a lot of celebrities voicing their opinion on the topic — be it Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Anushka Sharma or Rajkummar Rao. Karan Johar recently put up a blog post defending himself, and wrote that he is not the only one to be blamed. Now, filmmaker Onir is the latest one to join the bandwagon. The filmmaker says as far as his relationship with Karan is concerned, he finds him helpful.

“Nepotism exists in every field but I guess in Bollywood things become big. My personal interactions with Karan have been good. I’ll never forget his support for My Brother Nikhil (2005). It was my first film, and I was facing difficulty in getting a distributor. At that time, he recommended my film to Adi (Aditya Chopra). He liked the film and decided to go ahead without even asking me to make any changes,” he says.

Onir shares how Karan also lent his support for I Am (2010). “I won’t say I’m close to Karan, but I can say that he is a helpful person and many people will agree with me on this,” he adds

Ask him about his opinion on Kangana’s allegation on Karan and he says, “To each his own. She has voiced her opinion and we may or may not agree with it. My experience is different. Being an outsider, I will never forget what Karan and Adi did for me. ”

Talking about his plans of collaborating with Karan or Aditya, Onir says that he would love to. However, his style and space is different from the kind of films they are associated with. “But that doesn’t mean they have closed doors on me and vice versa. If I send them a script, I am sure they will read and give their opinion. And you never know something may work out,” he ends.
