If Bollywood Were a Democracy
Democracy is of the people, for the people and by the people. In a democracy, people have certain fundamental rights they can practice. Here is Bollywood being democratic.
Should we call it Bollycracy?
1. Right to Equality
Bollywood has made many movies that talk about equality. Recently Gulaab Gang gave male politicians a serious run for their money.
We had Kachra in Lagaan. We even have KRK's Deshdrohi - but maybe here Bollywood pushed eqaulity too far.
2. Right to Freedom
Nope! We're not talking of Bhagat Singh or Ben Kingsley as Gandhi. We're talking about people breaking about of jail.
3. Freedom of Religion
Religion is a touchy topic. And now that we have said that, Bollywood has given us many religious songs apart from celebrity Anup Jalota's remixed bhajans.
The song from Anil Kapoor's Pukar, Ek Tu Hi Bharosa, covers this point beautifully. Also Nana Patekar's Hindu-Muslim-Khoon dialogue in Krantiveer.
4. Right to Education and Culture
"Padhega India, tabhi toh badhega India." A very popular 'social responsibility' message by Anupam Kher. We also hope Bollywood's education drive is not driving KRK crazy.
5. Right Against Exploitation
This is not about Bollywood's casting couch. We are not talking about that kind of exploitation. We're talking about poor kids and helpers.
Kaalia was one! Poor lad, even after that salty drama, Gabbar did not spare him. Exploitation! Chillar Party and Traffic Signal are two innocent movies on the exploitation theme. They even covered animal rights. Witty one!
6. Right to Constitutional Remedies
This is the most important right as it keeps us safe from KRK and Rakhi Sawant going mainstream even after Bollywood being a democracy (democracy loopholes).
We can feel Sunny Deol's pain and why he got carried away. The man went berserk! We have a lot of space for a democratic court speech.
Call it cinema or social responsibility, our directors have given us some great democratic movies. Saumik Sen for eqaulity, Tinnu Anand for freedom, and then we even have Mahesh Bhatt for freedom of speech and expression.
