5 Popular Hollywood Genres Bollywood Is Yet To make a Movie On
Bollywood has never been shy of seeking ‘inspirations’ from Hollywood. While we have no qualms getting inspired or sometimes completely ripping off a Hollywood film, there are certain genres that Bollywood steers clear off.
One can always put forward the regressive argument about Indians not being ready for certain genres, the fact is with access to global entertainment being literally on our fingertips we have an entire audience base who are eagerly waiting for Bollywood to make movies on certain genres.
Yes some of these genres can be touchy or even too bold and censor board might again act like a primary school teacher offering sermons on morality and decency and right and wrong, but with the spirit of fight that Bollywood directors have inculcated in the recent times, it is not impossible.
Thus, instead of copying another romantic comedy from Hollywood, here are 5 genres we wish Bollywood experiments with
Space Odysseys
The popularity of films such as Gravity, Interstellar and other Hollywood space films in India is a clear indicator that Indian audiences are eagerly waiting for their very own desi space odyssey, especially now that as a country we have made benchmark progress in the field of space research. Yes, space movies are insanely expensive to make, but a country that has made Baahubali possible should not crib about that. One just needs an ambitious director backed by a solid research that would make it possible.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Dissociative identity disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder is a psychological condition where the patient develops multiple personalities or alter egos. One can only imagine the scope of cinematic moments that such a genre can explore. Drama, suspense and perhaps erotica- movies that explore dissociative identity disorder have everything one usually expects from Bollywood film. Especially with the on-going dialogue about mental health in the country, this would be a perfect time to explore this darker side of human behavior. Films such as Secret Window or Identity are a living testament of how powerful this genre can be.
Blood and Gore Fest
Before you write it off saying we have violent films, think again. Yes we have movies that show graphic violence but none of it is remotely comparable to gore fests such as Saw or Hostel. Yes, they are disturbing, but again the popularity of these films or Korean films which are known for their violent content, in our country goes to show that it is a viable movie genre that audience want to see more off. Anurag Kashyap we are counting on you for this one.
Stoner Movies
Ok, we know marijuana is still illegal in the country and it is perhaps not a good idea to glamourize this form of substance abuse. But, in the spirit of creativity and freedom of expression, this is one golden genre that Bollywood needs to explore. Although illegal, it is common knowledge that youth in the country has complete access to marijuana and maybe a sensitive attempt at this genre would actually help in sending message across about marijuana addiction. And one has to accept that a lot can be said in such movies that is not necessarily glamorizing the act of smoking up. Plus, the scope of VFX and comedy in this genre is unfathomable and something we are dying to see from Bollywood.
Genocide
While we can all pretend ignorance, but the truth is there are incidences in our country that can be termed as genocide or mass murder of people belonging to a certain religion, caste or race. Bollywood, which is pretty adept at making hard-hitting political dramas should have no problem in tackling the issue of genocide and it’s high time we address certain historical wrongs and making a sensitive film on it can be a huge step in that direction. We are truly done waiting for our version of Schindler's List.
