Girl Power: Sonakshi Sinha, Kiara Advani, Kriti Sanon And These Actresses Hit Triple Centuries In 2019

With Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma not having a release in 2019 and Priyanka Chopra featuring in a solitary non-mainstream film, the ground was wide open for many actresses to make their mark. Sonakshi Sinha managed to make the most of it, while Kiara Advani and Kriti Sanon made maximum gains. Here we present the 15 top grossing actresses of 2019.

Sonakshi Sinha - 437.83 crores [Mission Mangal - 203 crores, Dabangg 3 - 150 crores (expected), Kalank - 81 crores, Khaandaani Shafakhaana - 3.83 crores] 

The only film that was centered on her character, Khaandaani Shafakhaana, was a disaster at the box office. Sonakshi Sinha had a supporting role to play in another major flop, Kalank. She did show a spark of what she is capable of in Dabangg 3 though, and her biggest success of 2019 was Mission Mangal which was a multi-starrer affair.

Kiara Advani - 428.24 crores [Kabir Singh - 278.24 crores, Good Newwz - 150 crores (expected)] 

2019 was Kiara Advani's year. She had to play a meek character in Kabir Singh and audiences could have reacted either ways to her performance. She did well though and the film emerged as an all time blockbuster. Later, she did Good Newwz where she played an altogether opposite, loud character. Audiences lapped up to her all over again and the film is a major success.

Kriti Sanon - 343.25 crores [Housefull 4 - 208.50 crores, Luka Chuppi - 95 crores, Panipat - 33.75, Arjun Patiala - 6 crores] 

Kriti Sanon has been leaving a good impression with each of her outings and 2019 was pretty much a busy year for her, what with as many as four releases. She was the central protagonist alongside Kartik Aaryan in box office super hit Luka Chuppi. Arjun Patiala went unnoticed and Panipat was an unfortunate disaster. However, her multi-starrer Housefull 4 made up for it.

Taapsee Pannu - 319.89 crores [Mission Mangal - 203 crores, Badla - 87.99 crores, Saand Ki Aankh - 23.40 crores, Game Over - 5.50 crores] 

Though Mission Mangal would go down as the 200 Crore Club blockbuster where Taapsee Pannu was one of the half a dozen characters, she would be quite happy with the way audiences and industry at large responded to her other releases. Badla was a bonafide super hit, Saand Ki Aankh showed her in a different light and Game Over was a daring piece of work for her.

Shraddha Kapoor - 303.09 crores [Chhichhore - 153.09 crores, Saaho [Hindi] - 150 crores]

One of the top new actresses around who has been quite steady at the box office, Shraddha Kapoor had two Hindi releases and both did quite well at the box office. Though Chhichhore was an ensemble affair and Saaho was revolving around Prabhas' character, a hit film is what eventually counts and Shraddha managed to get them in back to back weeks no less.

Bhumi Pednekar - 237 crores [Bala - 117 crores, Pati Patni aur Woh - 90 crores (expected), Saand Ki Aankh - 23.40 crores, Sonchiriya - 6.60 crores]

Though she has had a steady run at the box office ever since her debut release Dum Laga Ke Haisha, it wasn't until 2019 when industry saw Bhumi Pednekar in a new light altogether. Four releases, two major successes, one decent runner and a critically acclaimed performance later, Bhumi can pretty much celebrate the fact that she has arrived in the bigger scheme of things.

Madhuri Dixit - 235.23 crores [Total Dhamaal - 154.23 crores, Kalank - 81 crores]

2019 finally turned out to be a year when Madhuri Dixit truly made her comeback. Her Dil, Beta and Raja director Indra Kumar knew what's best for her and gave her a major success, Total Dhamaal. Kalank flopped but there were glimpses of Madhuri Dixit of yore.

Alia Bhatt - 221 crores [Gully Boy - 140 crores, Kalank - 81 crores]

2019 was a rather mixed year for Alia Bhatt. On one side her Gully Boy turned out to be a hit, while on the other her Kalank was a major flop. Ironically, the former was primarily a Ranveer Singh show whereas latter had her play a key part. One thing that remained consistent though was her credible performance.

Katrina Kaif - 211.07 crores [Bharat]

With only a single release to her name, Katrina Kaif would be rather content with the way 2019 went. She had a role parallel to that of Salman Khan in Bharat and was rather graceful in playing younger as well as an old character.

Vidya Balan - 203 crores [Mission Mangal] 

Class is permanent and that was pretty much demonstrated yet again by Vidya Balan, who had the meatiest part amongst the leading ladies of Mission Mangal. Walking shoulder to shoulder with Akshay Kumar (and sometimes even ahead), the actress rocked the show.

Ananya Panday - 163 crores [Pati Patni aur Woh - 90 crores (expected), Student of the Year 2 - 73 crores] 

Seldom does it happen that a debutant manages to score two successes in a single calendar year. However, Ananya Panday can well celebrate that fact. Her Student of the Year 2 may not have really covered much of a distance but Pati Patni aur Woh turned out to be a clean hit. Moreover, audiences saw her as a college kid as well as a mature young woman.

Rakul Preet Singh - 151.28 crores [De De Pyaar De - 103.50 crores, Marjaavaan - 47.78 crores]

In the industry for a while now, Rakul Preet Singh finally had a major Bollywood hit to her name once De De Pyaar De released. Her performance in the film was sparkling whereas in Marjaavaan, she got into an altogether different kind of dramatic avatar. Both films did well.

Kareena Kapoor Khan - 150 crores (expected) - Good Newwz

She took a break again post Veere Di Wedding but it was worth it as Good Newwz had an even meatier character for her to chew upon. Kareena Kapoor Khan has showed once again that there is hardly anyone like her and with Good Newwz, she is set for a very good success.

Nushrat Bharucha - 142.26 crores [Dream Girl]

From Love Sex Aur Dhokha to Dream Girl, it has been quite some journey for Nushrat Bharucha. Though the film was primarily an Ayushmann Khurranna film all the way, Nushrat did bring on the smiles whenever she appeared on frame. Moreover, a super hit film doesn't harm anyone.

Kangana Ranaut - 130.49 crores [Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi - 92.19 crores, Judgementall Hai Kya - 38.30 crores] 

The only leading lady in this list who actually had a biggie entirely to her name, Kangana Ranaut scored well with Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi. The film in fact deserved to do even better. As for Judgementall Hai Kya, Kangana stepped into a really complex part and her conviction showed.
