Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Review: Ranveer & Alia’s must watch film is high on emotions, entertainment and eye-openers

There are some movies that evoke a plethora of emotions in you while there are some which turn out to be an eye-opener. Then there are also some which tantalize the Bollywood enthusiast in you. Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani does all three. This Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer gives you an adrenaline rush of entertainment, and energy and makes you scream out loud that the essence of Bollywood ain't not dying anytime soon.

The plot revolves around the quintessential Bollywood-style love story between Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) who hails from one of the richest aristocratic families of Delhi. He's rich, bratty, snooty, flaunts his protein shake and a ripped-off body with swag, and makes his English go haywire without a care in the world. Enter Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt) who's everything that Rocky is not. She's educated, liberal, political, and opinionated and is not afraid to voice out anything that she feels is wrong. What happens when their world collide especially when their families are as different as chalk and cheese? that's what forms the main crux of the plot.

Karan Johar has curated a wholesome family entertainer which also aims to bring many underlying societal wrongs to the forefront under the garb of a love story. Be it Rani trying to empower the women of the Randhawa household who have been suppressed, tormented, and left devoid of their happiness and aspirations or Rocky trying to find acceptance with his unabashed self in the sophisticated and cultured lifestyle of the Chatterjees, the movie sheds light into many undercurrents. The writing by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy has dialogues ranging from cheesy pickup lines, sleazy PJs, and many references from Karan Johar's previous movies which strike a chord.

The highlighting of body shaming, gender bias, and judgment while pursuing a career, women expected to suppress or compromise their dreams and aspirations after marriage, or how an emotional bond formed out of love can surpass any relation formed out of familial blood and ties also forms one of the main crux of the plot. The beauty of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is that it doesn't get too preachy and yet stays true to its message. However, we would have loved it if the movie would've been executed with more crisp editing since it added to the length.

Alia Bhatt is an amalgamation of beauty, grace, and intensity as Rani Chatterjee. The rebellious, opinionated, and fiery streak of her character is meticulously portrayed by the actress. Apart from a little unpolished Bengali accent, there's nowhere her going haywire with this one. But the star of this ship is Ranveer Singh. He lives his role of Rocky Randhawa flawlessly wherein you laugh at him, cringe at his English pronunciation, and also discover a die-hard romantic and a child inside him. The actor makes his character extremely endearing and impactful with his energy and intensity. There's never a dull moment with him. Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi will give you some whistle-worthy moments with their scenes making you gush over their screen presence all over again. Jaya Bachchan plays her husband Amitabh Bachchan's character in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (quite literally) and is very powerful and convincing with the same. The other supporting cast members like Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, Kshitee Jog, and Anjali Anand do full justice to their respective parts of being the hesitant, flawed, and dysfunctional family members.

Karan Johar's quintessential elements like the music, costumes, and larger-than-life locales and sets add more grandeur to Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The music by Pritam also saw the inclusion of many vintage songs which will make your hearts flutter with nostalgia and happiness. All the soundtracks especially 'Tum Kya Mile', 'What Jhumka?' and 'Dhindora' sound even more magnanimous with the visuals. But it's 'Ve Kamleya' which is truly soul-stirring. The costume by Eka Lakhani is nuanced and is a strong representation of contrasting cultures, from Ranveer's eye-blinding flashy outfits to Alia's elegant and breezy sarees.

Watch Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani relive the quintessential Karan Johar experience which we had been missing from the Bollywood sphere for such a long time. A true blue family entertainer which will not waver with its essence until the very end. This Prem Kahaani is definitely a success.
