Koffee With Karan 8: Sharmila Tagore reveals what makes her different from her contemporaries, wants Alia Bhatt in her biopic

Sharmila Tagore is one of the leading actresses of the film industry between the '60s and '70s era. With films like Waqt, Anupama An Evening in Paris, Devi, Nayak, Aradhana, Chupke Chupke and Namkeen among others, the actress has carved her niche as the most accomplished actress in both Hindi and Bengali cinema. The actress is the recipient of awards of the highest degree including Padma Bhushan, and two National Film Awards. The actress still shines onscreen with her latest outing being the OTT drama Gulmohar. In her recent appearance on Koffee With Karan Season 8, the actress revealed what makes her different from her contemporaries.

Tagore said, “Because I was not chaperoned, I wore hipsters and I danced at wrap parties. It was not done those days.” Further, Karan asked her to name a Bollywood actress who would do justice to a biopic based on your life. Tagore was quick to take Alia Bhatt’s name. “If it’s being done now, I would say Alia and perhaps if it’s a little later I would Sara.” Further, Tagore talked about her biggest achievement as a film actor, she said, “Personally, that I have been able to balance family and my career and I am working now, ” and Karan added, “And the legacy continues.”

Tagore also gave her cents on the freedom of choice the actors of today's generation have. “I don’t think I denied any freedom of choice. For me, I did what I wanted to do. For me, what I envy, putting it in a different way, is the kind of roles these girls are getting now which we never did. We just got that hand-ringing and weeping roles. There have been such fabulous roles now.” Meanwhile, Tagore ventured into acting at the age of 14 with Satyajit Ray's acclaimed Bengali epic drama The World of Apu in 1959. She worked for more than five decades and continues to entertain audiences with her powerful performances. She was last seen in Kusum Batra’s film Gulmohar where she played a queer character and won the Best Actress award at Filmfare OTT Awards.
