Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most successful shows on Disney +, its first two episodes had the biggest opening for the Star Wars series on the platform.

Star Wars Fans knew that Obi-Wan Kenobi was initially a movie idea but was stuck in development hell for years and finally Lucasfilms decided to adapt it into a series.

And finally, we know why it took so long and why the studio scrapped the movie idea.

Writer Stuart Beattie reveals in an interview that it was the box-office failure of the 2018 movie Solo.

Initially, the studio had Beattie spend almost a year and a half working on a planned trilogy around the Jedi master and his adventures.

And this new revelation confirms speculations that the failure of the Han Solo movie led to the studio scrapping the idea of a movie trilogy.

2018s Solo movie was plagued with issues, which started when the studio fired directors Phil Lord and Christopher Mille over 'creative differences' and finally landed on Ron Howard to finish the project.

This decision by the studio explains the tone and pace of the movie and why it ended up being a critical and commercial failure.

In the interview with The Direct Stuart Beattie revealed his work on the initial movie trilogy and its cancellation

"I spent like a year-and-a-half working on it. And then, when the decision was made not to make any more spin-off films after Solo came out, I left the project and went on to other things."

"It just was dying to be done. You know, unfortunately, Solo changed the direction of the system. I like Solo, personally, but it hadn't made a lot of money," the writer explained. "It is crazy in some ways to think about it how it [was directed by] of the best filmmakers working today. But, just because it didn't hit a certain number, they just had to rethink. And, again, way above my paygrade, but it certainly crushed us. Devastated, absolutely devastated."

He went on to talk about his appreciation for the the show

"I'm glad it got made. I'm glad the show got made. I'm proud of my story that [got] told. I'm glad my characters are all through it. And I'm glad I got credit for it. I wish they'd been able to make my movies." He'd also note that "Ewan was on board"

Well, Star Wars fans agree with the writer and while it would have been cool to see the Jedi master on the big screen the six-part series despite its flaws was a fun ride.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow and consists of six episodes

The show is currently streaming on Disney+
