Salman Khan sentenced to 5 years in prison

Salman Khan who has been convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the 2002 hit-and-run case, has been sentenced to 5 years behind bars. One man died and four others were left injured in the incident. The court held that Salman Khan was driving under the influence of alcohol and he did not have his driving licence with him at the time.

Judge D.W. Deshpande convicted the 49-year-old actor of culpable homicide for running his SUV while drunk over a group of homeless men sleeping on the pavement and then fleeing the scene. The judge also said, “It is not probable that Salman's driver Ashok Singh was driving the car”. “All charges against you are proven. Court has come to conclusion that you were driving the car under the influence of alcohol”, he added.

Ashok Singh, driver of Salman Khan, now faces charges of perjury. The prosecution is likely to file charges against him for lying in court. Ashok Singh told the court that he was driving the actor's Toyota Land Cruiser on the night of September 28, 2002."I was driving when the tyre burst and the brake jammed. The car went over the steps. I saw that people were trapped beneath. I got out of the right side and Salman too got out of the right side as the left door was jammed", he told the court in March.
