Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning - Part 2 delayed: Tom Cruise's next film in the franchise gets a new title and release date

Die-hard fans of the Tom Cruise starrer Mission Impossible franchise will need to exercise a bit more patience. The upcoming film, initially titled as Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 2 and slated for a June 28, 2024 release, has been pushed almost a year ahead, with the new silver screen debut now set for May 23, 2025. The unexpected twist isn't just the delay. The title, earlier announced as Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, is also undergoing a significant change, shrouding the upcoming film in mystery.

Strike-out in Hollywood

As per a report on The Hollywood Reporter the core reason behind the movie's delay is the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood. These disruptions have not only affected Tom Cruise's next mission but have also thrown a wrench into the schedules of numerous Hollywood projects. This work stoppage marks the longest walkout in Hollywood history, hitting the 100-day milestone on October 21. With failed negotiations, production has come to a standstill. However, there's a shimmer of hope as both the actors' union and major studio alliances announced that discussions will recommence on Tuesday, October 24.

Riding on past success

The preceding installment, Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, set the bar high with its blockbuster reception in July 2023. It's no wonder that expectations for its sequel are sky-high. To up the ante, Mission Impossible 8 will be leveraging Imax cameras, securing a three-week run in Imax theaters. The decision was possibly influenced by MI 7's swift exit from Imax screens due to competing films. Nonetheless, with the series' reputation for breathtaking stunts, often executed by Cruise himself, it remains a crucial talking point for Hollywood.
