Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has drawn praise from critics and audiences, alike. Starring Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel, Laapataa Ladies has surpassed Ranbir Kapoor Kapoor’s Animal in terms of audience viewership on Netflix.

    Laapataa Ladies surpasses Animal viewership

According to a report by Binged, Laapataa Ladies surpassed Animal on Netflix with 13.8 million views, becoming 2024’s breakout hit. However, the film has not surpassed Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter which has 14 million views. While Animal made its OTT release in January this year, Laapataa Ladies dropped on Netflix in April this year and Fighter landed on OTT in March.

But Kiran Rao’s 2024 directorial film could surpass Fighter viewership in the coming weeks as it lags behind Fighter by only 0.2 million viewership and with Laapataa Ladies growing popularity, the film could hit the mark very soon.

Backed by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande, Laapataa Ladies is directed by Kiran Rao and stars Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel. Set in the rural setting of 2001, the film focuses on two young brides who go missing during a train journey. How the husbands search for their respective brides becomes the plotline of the film.

Commenting about this news on Reddit, one user wrote, “That's good. This movie deserves all the attention,” while another wrote, “Deserves every bit of success and more coming otw!”

Verbal battle between Kiran Rao and Sandeep Reddy Vanga

The news broke on the internet weeks after a verbal battle between the directors of Laapataa Ladies and Animal.

Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga had made harsh comments during an earlier interview with Dainik Bhaskar and said, “My AD showed me an article. It is of the second ex-wife of a superstar. She is saying that films like Bahubaali 2 and Kabir Singh promote misogyny and stalking. I think she does not know the difference between stalking and approaching.”

While speaking to Brut, Kiran Rao that she had never commented on Mr Sandeep’s films because she had never seen them. “I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not about the specific film. Why Mr Vanga has assumed that I was talking about his film you’ll have to ask him. I have never seen his film,” she remarked.
