Yesteryear actress Mumtaz was considered to be one of the most versatile and beautiful artists of her era. But not everyone knew about her whirlwind romance with legendary actor Shammi Kapoor. Unfortunately, their love story rather met a tragic end which she opened up about in her latest interview.

Talking about the same, Mumtaz told Zoom that she fell head over heels in love with the Junglee actor and her dreams came to reality when he proposed marriage to her she was only 17. She recalled them working together in the 1968 film Brahmachari and after shooting the iconic song ‘Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke’ they fell in love and dated for a couple of years. For the unversed, Kapoor’s wife Geeta Bali had passed away during this time.

The Teesri Manzil actor proposed marriage to Mumtaz when she was only 17 and he was twice his age. However, Mumtaz said, “I loved him deeply but he told me that I couldn’t work after marriage as women marrying into the Kapoor clan didn’t work.” This did not go down well with Kapoor and he lashed out at the Aap Ki Kasam actress. She added, “He was angry and told me, ‘If you would have truly loved me, you would’ve accepted my proposal and left working in films. You only pretend to love me because you wanted to score big films opposite me.” This inevitably left her heartbroken.

Mumtaz married Mayur Madhvani and had two daughters Natasha and Tanya. Her daughter Natasha married actor Fardeen Khan. As for Shammi Kapoor, he tied the knot with Neila Devi in January 1969. Kapoor had two children, a son Aditya Raj Kapoor, and a daughter, Kanchan Kapoor from his first wife Geeta Bali. Kapoor passed away in August 2011. His last movie was the Ranbir Kapoor starrer Rockstar.
