Sara Ali Khan to essay freedom fighter Usha Mehta in Aye Watan...Mere Watan, film to be produced by Karan Johar

In the short span of her film career, Sara Ali Khan has strived to play versatile roles to prove her mettle as an actress. Now, reportedly there has been an interesting development surrounding her latest project which promises to be one of the most exciting lineups of her filmography. As per reports, Sara will be playing the role of real-life freedom fighter Usha Mehta in her upcoming movie Aye Watan…Mere Watan.

According to a news report by Bollywood Hungama, a source close to the development spoke about the same stating, “Sara signed this film earlier this year. Now that she has finished her other commitments, the film will go on the floors in a few weeks. She has been prepping for the film and is very excited to essay a real-life character for the first time.”

The report went on to say that the movie will primarily focus on Usha Mehta starting an underground radio station which was named Congress Radio. The radio station had an important role to play during the Quit India Movement of 1942. It used to broadcast uncensored news and information that was banned by the British government, thus contributing vastly to the freedom struggle.

The movie will be bankrolled by Karan Johar ’s Dharmatic Entertainment and will get an OTT release on Amazon Prime Video. The director of Aye Watan…Mere Watan will be Kannan Iyer while the script will be penned by Darab Farooqui. The source also spoke about Kannan who was earlier supposed to direct the Abhinav Bindra biopic with Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. The source said, “However, the film is on the backburner and when he got a chance to direct Aye Watan...Mere Watan, he was more than happy and accepted it.”

Apart from Aye Watan…Mere Watan, another biopic on Usha Mehta is said to be in the works and will be titled Freedom Radio. The biopic will be created by Ketan Mehta who is also the nephew of the legendary freedom fighter. Apart from this film, Sara Ali Khan also has the film Gaslight and an untitled romantic film with Vicky Kaushal in her pipeline.
