The release of Tamil superstar Vikram's Thangalaan is waiting for the Lok Sabha elections to be over, said producer Dhananjayan, who is also the CEO of Studio Green. He confirmed that the producers plan to release it in cinemas immediately after the election results are announced on June 4. The official announcement on the exact release date is expected soon.
Many big-budget movies, including Thangalaan, were put on hold owing to the elections. This caused theatres in Tamil Nadu to crave exciting content to draw audiences, resulting in a box office dry spell. The theatres were so hard up for new movies that they relied on Malayalam films to fill seats.
With the marathon Lok Sabha elections, spanning seven phases, almost over, the producers are now ready to move the project into the promotion phase.
The filmmakers have planned grand promotional events across the country, with Vikram and director Pa Ranjith leading the media interactions. "This film already enjoys great hype, and we have planned promotions to add even more momentum in the run-up to its release," said Dhananjayan.
Thangalaan missed a few release dates in the past due to production reasons. Initially, the film was expected to hit screens on January 26, and the filmmakers had even begun promotions. However, the release plan underwent a sudden change.
Thangalaan is expected to become a landmark film, not just in the careers of Ranjith and Vikram, but in Tamil cinema. The filmmakers reportedly plan to launch the film in multiple foreign languages. Dhananjayan even expressed his desire to see Thangalaan compete at the Oscars.
Set against the backdrop of colonial India, Thangalaan follows the life and struggles of a tribal group that takes on the might of the British Empire to protect their rights to land, water, and gold.
Besides Vikram, Thangalaan also stars Pasupathy, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Daniel Caltagirone and Harikrishnan Anbudurai.
