7 years of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy: When Sushant Singh Rajput called himself ‘the 75th Byomkesh’

One of the most talented and versatile performers that the Hindi film industry ever saw, late actor Sushant Singh Rajput believed in taking up unconventional roles that challenged him. That is one of the reasons that attracted him to Dibakar Banerjee’s 2015 mystery film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy ! The project received rave reviews from critics while Sushant was lauded for fitting the character perfectly, just like a glove. Well, on the 7th anniversary of the film, lets revisit the time when Sushant called himself the ‘75th Byomkesh’ and shared how the film was different.

In an interview with PTI, Sushant was quoted saying, “There are so many TV shows and films about Byomkesh… I am probably the 75th Byomkesh. So, we have the essence of the story in our film but it is a very personal take of Dibakar. Even though it is something that has been done so many times and in different ways, I never had an iota of doubt with Dibakar and Yash Raj on board.” While Sushant did a fantastic job of breathing life into the character of the beloved detective, it wasn’t an easy process for him.

He had explained, “The character was in a way very distant from who I thought I was at that point of time. So, convincing myself to be Byomkesh was challenging for me. I had an idea of my own personality and got a hang of the character when I spoke to Dibakar.” Back then, Sushant had spent a lot of time in Kolkata, doing his homework for the character. He connected so much with the city that he soon started feeling like a Bengali himself.

Well, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is one of the many incredible films that we can remember the late superstar by.
