Film lovers were divided when rumours about Ranbir Kapoor playing Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s film Ramayana began doing the rounds. It was also suggested that his actress wife Alia Bhatt will play Sita, but she apparently backed out from the ambitious project. While some felt Ranbir being a versatile actor can portray any character on-screen, others were not inclined towards the Animal hero playing a deity. Even Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut was against this idea. In her social media opinion piece, she had stated: “No pale-looking druggie soy boy should play Lord Rama.”

But actor Arun Govil, who won hearts with his portrayal as Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, believes Ranbir could do justice to the role. At a media interaction, TOI quoted him saying, “Voh ho sakta hai ya nahi ho sakta hai voh toh samay batayega. Pehle se kuch nahi kaha ja sakta kisi ke baare main (It may or may not happen, only time will tell. Nothing can be said beforehand about anyone). But, as far as Ranbir is concerned, he is a good actor. He is an award-winning actor.”

He went on to add, “Jitna jaanta hoon main unko, bohot sanskaari bacche hain voh. Unke andar morals, sanskar, sanskriti hai. Maine dekha hai kayi baar unko. I'm sure that he will try to do his level best (From what I know about him, he is a very cultured boy. He has morals, values, and culture within him. I have seen him many times. I'm sure that he will try to do his level best).”

Now that Alia has reportedly stepped down, rumours suggest that South actress Sai Pallavi will play the role of Sita opposite Ranbir, soon after she makes her Bollywood debut with an Aamir Khan backed film. Meanwhile, rocking star Yash has been roped in to play Ravan whereas Bobby Deol, who shared the screen with Ranbir in Animal, is rumoured to portray Kumbhkaran. Sunny Deol, on the other hand, might be on board as Lord Hanuman. What are your thoughts on this casting coup?
