Mission: Impossible 7 director hints that wild fan theory about Ethan Hunt's escape from a submarine is true

The seventh installment in the highly successful Mission Impossible franchise is currently gearing up for release next year.

The movie is called Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and its sequel will be a send-off to super spy Ethan Hunt.

The franchise is non for its spectacular action set pieces and the fact that actor Tom Cruise does his own stunts, thus often raising the stakes.

The recent trailer for the movie had Tom Cruise hanging off the top of a biplane while it was flipping upside down. However, it has also been confirmed that both Dead Reckoning films will feature action setpieces revolving around a giant submarine.

During an interview with the Light the Fuse podcast, director Christopher McQuarrie was asked about his thoughts on a popular fan theory that suggests that scuba suit seen in Dead Reckoning's submarine scene could be used to exit the submarine through the missile hatch.

McQuarrie coyly responded, saying that "everything that that person is speculating on is certainly something you could do with that suit."

We came up with this submarine sequence, that then kind of ran away… it took on a life of its own, as things in Mission do, and it became… something of a character in and of itself. [That fan theory is] interesting. That’s all very fascinating. That sounds like stuff that would be exciting to put in a movie... I would say everything that that person is speculating on is certainly something you could do with that suit.

While the director doesn't confirm the theory, it does confirm that there will be a sequence involving a missile hatch.

And it is something that Ethan Hunt has never done before, which proves there is something bigger and better planned.

The movie stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, and Pom Klementieff.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set to release on July 14, 2023.
