Bollywood movie budgets have gone up exponentially in the past few years and so have the risks for all parties involved with these movies. Filmmakers go out of their way to minimize risk when planning a big budget extravaganza but occasion despite all planning things do not fall in line at the box office once a film arrives in cinemas.

The recent failure of Ranveer Singh starrer ‘83 has been a huge shocker for the industry. The producers stowed away the project for 20 months only to face a huge loss when a carefully planned release on Christmas Eve was followed on its heel by the third wave of Covid-19.

The sports drama based on true events is reportedly costlier than S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali with a reported budget of Rs. 270 crores and that means the movie stood to lose as much as it could have gained.

‘83 has so far collected Rs. 101.32 crores in India in 19 days according to Reliance Entertainment while overseas the collections stand at Rs. 59.93 crores in the same duration. While it may be Covid-19 which slowed down the movie at the box office, ’83 has emerged as the biggest loss maker of all time in Bollywood according to a report Box Office India report.

Listing the top five biggest loss making films of all times, the website placed ’83 on the number one slot with over Rs. 80 cr. in losses. The list also included films like Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet with losses of Rs. 70 crores, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Zero with Rs. 70 crore loss, Hrithik Roshan starrer Mohenjo Daro which incurred a Rs. 55 crores loss and Ranbir Kapoor starrer Jagga Jasoos which faced Rs. 50 crores worth of loss.

’83 is still running in cinemas and is due to get a digital premiere eight weeks post release.
