5 Films That Varun Dhawan And Alia Bhatt's Kalank Reminded Us Of!
Karan Johar's epic saga Kalank released on 17th April. This has been one of the most awaited films of the year, but post-release, many people have been left utterly disappointed. In fact, though some critics gave the film a good rating, the audiences declared it as “tabaahi”, “barbaadi” and “3rd class”.
Well, I watched the film myself, in a later a lot of course and even though the film had its moments, I could never empathise with the characters at all. Maybe a lot of you out there felt the same way as well since the film saw a dip in its collection on Thursday.
The trailer proved that the makers of the film attempted to make a grand show, just like Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies. But when I watched the film, it reminded me of a ton of other films as well. Here are 5 of the films that I was reminded of while watching Kalank:
1. Devdas
Madhuri Dixit is the reason why I had been reminded of Devdas mode. Correct me if I am wrong, but she seems to be having the Devdas hangover all throughout the film. Even her grand Kotha of Hira Mandi reminded us of her Kotha in Devdas. And then there is ‘Tabah Ho Gaye’ song.
2. Main Tera Hero
Right from Varun Dhawan’s entry to his over-the-top avatar in almost the entire film, Varun Dhawan was just the same as he was in a film like Main Tera Hero. Don’t get me wrong, I know many people thought this to be Varun’s one of the best performances, but I’ll beg to differ here. There had been scenes where Varun should have brought out the empathy in me, but he failed so miserably. I am not sure why he had such an OTT avatar! He had been in so much pain that he sought vengeance. Shouldn’t such character look more scheming and express more with their eyes instead of throwing around ‘dilphek’ vibes and seeking to fulfill the ‘kaami’ in other’s lives in such a direct way that it would be borderline harassment?
3. Ishqzaade
The whole plot of feigning love for a girl to seek revenge against her family so reminded me of Ishqzaade. And the best part was that, like Ishqzaade, the boy actually fell in love. Oh Boy!
4. Lootera
Lootera had been one of the best performances of Sonakshi Sinha. It had been so iconic that every bit of Sonakshi on-screen felt like she is stuck in the Vikramaditya Motwane film. Right from her looks to her dialogue delivery, it screamed Lootera.
5. Titanic
I know a lot of you would question my sanity at this point. But this is the last point, so hear me out. Didn’t you feel that the background score by ‘Every night in my dreams’ tweaked a little here and there? It gave me a major Titanic throwback honestly. My belief was consolidated by the last shot of the film. The close-up shot of Alia remembering what she lost and how life could have turned up to be had all these not happened has major Titanic feels. Turn her a little old and give her a locket to throw in the sea (or the railway tracks here), and Roop could have made a good Rose.
