The recent rumor on the internet was that John Wick director Chad Stahelski was going to direct the upcoming Daredevil series starring Charlie Cox.

The rumors were fueled after the director revealed that he approached Marvel in 2019 to let him direct the upcoming Blade series which stars Mahershala Ali in the lead alongside Kit Harrington.

But now in a recent interview, Stahelski shoots down the rumors about Daredevil, stating that he is no longer interested in directing big franchise movies like Star Wars or Marvel.

During the interview with ComicBook.com, he said "As far as Daredevil goes, it's the same thing," he said of the constrictions of well-known IPs.

"It's like, I've just been let off the leash literally for nine years, doing whatever I want. And if I want John Wick to go to f***ing space in [John Wick: Chapter 5], he'll go to f***ing space."

"The fans want us to make something that fits in what they've kind of seen before. So it's slightly nostalgic and kind of what they want but subverted enough to be different and fresh. Like, keep saying that. You want the same, but different," Stahelski continued. "How do you keep doing that with 50 Star Wars properties? You're going to mess up. You're going to tread."

"I'm not defending either side," the filmmaker added, "it's just a tricky line when you're dealing with existing IP, especially something as massive as a 75-year-old superhero comic book, or a 40-year-old Star Wars fan base."

Stahelski's points do make sense as Marvel and other big franchises do tend to keep their directors and writers on a short leash.

Many directors have spoken about this and walked away from projects citing 'creative differences.

In a recent interview, Moon Knight star Ethan Hawke said that while he felt that Marvel was very actor friendly it wasn't the same case with directors.

Chad Stahelski is gearing up for the release of the John Wick 4, in which he has full creative control so if he wants to take John Wick to space he can.

The movie stars Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick, and Clancy Brown.

John Wick 4 will hit theaters on March 24, 2023.
