Actor-filmmaker R Madhavan reminisced about the unconventional scenario during the shooting of a pivotal scene in the movie 3 Idiots, where the characters were required to portray 'drunkenness'. Madhavan disclosed that he actually consumed alcohol on set that day, following the suggestion of the film's lead, Aamir Khan. According to Madhavan, Aamir's advice was that it's better to act sober while being intoxicated than to act intoxicated while being sober.

Appearing on the BeerBiceps podcast, R Madhavan spoke about the scene in detail and hence confirmed that all three central actors were drunk, He said, “So, Aamir’s idea was that in drunk scenes, you should never act like you’re drunk. You should drink and act like you’re normal. Basically, we wanted to shoot at 9, so Aamir made a plan. By 8 we’d start drinking; by 8:30-8:45 we’d have had our three-four pegs. But what happened is that the lighting conked off, so at 8:30 they said another two hours left. So, we wanted to maintain the same level of alcohol in our blood, except we didn’t realise that the cold Bangalore air would have a complete different impact on our intoxication. By the time the shot came, we thought we were completely normal, except we didn’t realise we were taking hours to deliver the lines."

Under the direction of Rajkumar Hirani, the 2009 release 3 Idiots received both critical acclaim and achieved significant commercial success. Not only India but the film, notably popular in China, surpassed the Rs 450 crore mark in global box office earnings. The film also featured actor Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani in important roles. Till date, the film is remembered for it's stellar acting performances.
