    Ken and Barbie

2023 was a wonderful year for cinema. But Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was undeniably one of the biggest and most talked about releases of the year. Not only did it shake the box office with record breaking numbers but also won hearts with the concept of Barbie going on a journey of self-discovery post an existential crisis. The film also brought out one of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s career best performances. So it came as quite a shock when both Margot and Greta were nowhere to be seen on the Oscars 2024 nominations’ list. Well Ryan, who earned a spot on the Best Supporting Actor category, has now shared an official statement on the disappointing snub.

This note was shared on social media by Ryan’s stylist, Mark Avery. It read: “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”

He further wrote: “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

In the comment section below, many are lauding the actor for speaking about this snub. One message read, “need this energy from more men in hollywood”, whereas another fan commented: “Hollywood needs Ryan Gosling. He’s saying the right thing and doing the right thing and he never deviates from that. Ever. A class act.”

In your opinion, don’t Margot and Greta deserve to be nominated for their incredible work in Barbie?
