He began his career by working with Kalaimani. It was S. J. Suriyah who recommended Murugadoss to Ajith for making his directorial debut with Dheena in 2001. In 2005 his third film Ghajini was one of the biggest blockbusters that gained him recognition as a director. In 2008, he made his debut in Bollywood with Ghajini (which was the Hindi remake of Ghajini) which broke all the records to become the highest grossing Hindi film. His second Bollywood film is Holiday, a remake of his own blockbuster Thuppakki.
